Chapter 4
DREAMS ARE THE SECRET DOOR

It’s just a dream dear, go back to sleep, said my mother. Nightmares were a scary part of my childhood that I eventually outgrew. My parents, like many parents, didn’t have a clue as to what caused these night terrors. As a matter of fact, many people think dreams belong to an inner fantasy world that stops at dawn and holds no relevance to waking reality.

Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. Dreams are the key to unlocking the daily puzzles of life. Our dreams are nightly messages that give us insight and guidance into our daily existence. To put it simply, dreams are the roadmap to our journey through life! If we learn to understand, interpret and take action on our dreams, we will maximize our potential in this lifetime. They are the secret door to truth. What truth? Our own personal truth that leads us to self-knowledge and personal growth and achievement. Some people go to astrologers, psychics and counselors seeking insight, when they already have a built-in advisor - nocturnal dreams!

All we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.
- Edgar Allen Poe.

STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS

We spend a third of our life sleeping, and rather than being in a state of unawareness or downtime, the night shift is filled with lessons of learning, and hours of productive creativity. When we fall asleep, we walk through a doorway to a different state of consciousness. It’s like walking from your living room to your bedroom. Although we are in the same house, the feeling and experience is quite different. The bedroom is generally softer and more subtle than the living areas with all their daily activity and electronic equipment. In a similar fashion, the sleeping state is a more subltle, ephemeral state. We go to this dreamland every night and learn daily lessons, bringing back knowledge that we utilize in the waking state.

Unfortunately, we don’t remember most of our dreams, but that does not mean that these dreams are unproductive and useless. For example, we may have a deja-vu experience while conversing with a friend, a stranger, or perhaps while visiting a new place. Suddenly, we get the feeling that we have done this or been there before. Often, we can even predict what the place will look like around the corner or what the person will say next. We ask, How can this be? How can we describe a place that we have never been before or predict the unspoken words of a conversation? Are we psychic or do we somehow have a brief glimpse of the future? The answer is both!

Don’t be afraid of the space between your dreams and reality. If you can dream it, you can make it so.
- Belva Davis

DÉJÀ VU

In our dreams, we often see the future as it pertains to our waking existence. We may dream of a conver- sation with our friend that has not yet occurred in our daily life. After dreaming the event, we forget the dream upon waking. We then proceed with our daily existence and eventually bump into the event we dreamed while living our waking life. Since we dreamed it previously, we get the weird or funny feel- ing that it has happened before, and in some cases are able to predict what will happen next. This occurs because we have already experienced the event in the dream state.

We may not consciously remember dreams, but our unconscious mind has stored the sleeping events, which it then compares to the waking reality. This explains the Déjà vu experience, the uncanny ability to predict the future sequence of words or events. How is this all possible? In dreams, we go to a place, which runs on a different time clock. In this dreamland, time is not linear. The past, present and future are all one, and are therefore experienced simultaneously. When we dream, we drift among the past, present and future events of our existence as easily as walking from one room to another. Consequently, in our dreams, we have access to our early childhood as well as our old age. All events are randomly accessed in dreams.

The eye sees a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination awake.
- Leonardo da Vinci.

If we need a good reason to study our dreams, or just wonder why we should even bother with them, the promise of accessing our future for guidance should certainly offer motivation. If you still doubt this innate ability that we all possess to access our own future through dreams, try recording your dreams for a while. The process of writing them down allows us to begin working consciously with our dream state.
