Summary
Hudson Rogers, recuperating in a remote New Hampshire retreat from an automobile crash that killed his wife, is almost unaware he has become the central figure in a centuries-old mystery that has cost the lives of at least three people. Suddenly his melancholy is shattered; he himself is under attack, and must cast off lethargy to escape - then try to seize the initiative. The key to survival is the deciphering of an ancient Abenaki legend. His only leads: the cryptic designation of a mountain peak where a curious death had occurred and the strangely aloof daughter of one of the victims, who leaves town rather than help him. The search for solution begins a perilous chase through Quebec, Marblehead, Boston , and the trails of the White Mountains, where a twilight battle on a forest island reveals a killer. But is there an enemy behind this one? And another hidden behind him? And...? The ending will still surprise you.
