Summary

Commanding a small brigade, the maga Portunista searches for the power of her former Cadre masters. Joining her is Seifas, survivor of an annihilated warrior family. Having fought away a suicidal despair, Seifas meets Jian, a cheering, hopeful stranger. Jian begins to lift the brigade's morale, which inspires resentment in Portunista.

After repelling a rival's attack, Portunista and her subcommanders explore the Tower of a murdered Cadrist. Her selfish actions lead to Jian's self-sacrifice, strengthening her internal conflict over him.

Three more brigades arrive around the valley, and Portunista stages a frantic defense of the Tower, inside and out. In desperation, she unleashes a mass-defense system--four walking plateaus she cannot control.
