Copyediting
Editorial services were first introduced to publishers in 1990 as a part of the full-service production division of BookMasters, Inc. Our staff is very diversified in their fields of expertise, providing the finest attention to detail in topics such as accounting, business, computer economics, insurance, statistics, marketing, health, social services, and education.
In addition to having an excellent in-house editorial staff, BookMasters works with over 30 freelance copyeditors. These professionals specialize in copyediting, proofreading, indexing, permission obtainment, sense reads, and accuracy checks. Our copyeditors must pass BookMasters' copyediting exam before work can be assigned. We work with freelancers from across the country, which allows us the opportunity to provide editors with expertise in many different disciplines.
Copyeditors are given the same list of style elements, used by the designer, typesetter, and the proofreader. Therefore, if questions arise, this helps identify and settle situations early on.
Publishers and authors alike appreciate our constant attention to detail, our skill, and our ability to meet tight deadlines. |

BookMasters is proficient in all levels of copyediting. Our guidelines are as follows:
- Light edit - This includes review of spelling, punctuation, and overall style.
- Medium edit - This involves spelling, punctuation, overall style, and minor rewording and reorganization.
- Heavy edit - This includes spelling, punctuation, overall style, essential editing, and moderate rewording and reorganization.
The publisher or author may determine the level of edit necessary, or BookMasters can suggest the best level upon review of the copy. |
The primary resources used by BookMasters’ staff include The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition. We are also able to work with alternative style guides specified by the publisher, such as the APA (American Psychological Association), the MLA (Modern Language Association), and our own well-tested house style. |
The advancements we have made in our editorial services allow us to help our customers achieve paperless book production. In addition to conventional paper editing, we offer electronic copyediting using Microsoft Word.
BookMasters has edited a substantial number of projects electronically. Once edited, we then soft proof the text through the use of PDF files. We have procedures in place to work with each author and instruct them on making their changes to the PDF files. There is no exchange of paper. Files can be sent via e-mail or placed on our FTP site for retrieval. The author can then make any necessary changes and send the files back to BookMasters to incorporate all edits. This not only saves time in the project schedule, but also allows shipping costs to be minimized.
Authors are very receptive to using these files and with our assistance, find it a very easy process.
Whether it is done manually or electronically, BookMasters is committed to providing the finest and most comprehensive editorial services in the industry. |
